So here’s a secret I don’t share very often…
I am INCREDIBLY lazy.
And it’s a problem.
Because while part of me wants to accomplish great things (including helping you read more, learn faster and be more productive)…
A big part of me wants to do this… 👇
I’m not kidding. I’d just as happily be downstairs, on the couch, watching a movie and slurping a peanut butter milkshake as trying to write you this update. 🤤
And there’s literally nothing to stop me.
Which begs the question, how DO people show up every day when all they really want is to sleep in, eat junk food and play video games?
How DO they make themselves do what is difficult, week after week after week, even when they don’t feel like doing it?
Good question. I’m glad that you asked. 🙌
Because while I can’t speak for everyone, I can tell you what works well for me.
What works well for me is accountability. It’s little tricks that make it much harder NOT to take action than to sit on my butt and do nothing.
For example (in my TRACKTION Planner):
- I set one weekly goal in every part of my life and review what did and didn’t happen last week every weekend;
- I set my top priorities for tomorrow and plan out every minute of my ideal schedule every night; and
- I track where my time actually went and what I actually accomplished, then compare it to what I envisioned every day.
Each tactic creates dissonance between where I am now and where I’ve decided I’m going. Each one fights inertia. Each one adds a little more forward momentum. 🚀
But that’s not all.
Because while accountability starts and ends with ourselves, the most powerful kind of accountability comes from the people around you. It’s why I deliberately spend time with people who motivate and inspire me…
I have a fiancée who helps me be kinder, more thoughtful and more practical every day that I’m lucky to spend with her.
I have friends, family and a team here at TAoL who keep me honest, call me out and make up for my many (many) weaknesses.
And I have YOU to keep me more balanced, more thoughtful and more productive than I’d ever have managed if I’d never been part of your journey.
Like I said. I’m INCREDIBLY lazy. And if you know how that feels then (a) you’re not alone and (b) life doesn’t need to be such a struggle.
You CAN hold yourself more accountable.
You CAN find a fellowship who’ll support and excite and inspire you.
You CAN work consistently on what matters even when you really don’t feel like it.
Admit that you’re human. Admit that you’re complicated. Admit that you’re lazy. Then find ways to be awesome and make big things happen regardless. 🔥
