How Brian Unlocked More Time For His Family WITHOUT Compromising His Career

TRACKTION Review - Brian P

This is Brian 👆 and, above all, he’s a father and husband.

I mean, sure, he’s an executive and expert and product manager for over $2B of health insurance products. And he’s a leader. And a Christian. And one of the most resourceful mid-day siesta takers of all time (funny story 😂).

But first and foremost, he’s a family man.

Which was making Brian’s life very difficult.

Because despite doing tons of productivity training, and despite getting things done in the office, and despite being on top of his work… Brian was struggling to be the husband and father he wanted to be.

He was frustrated at not spending time in the evenings and on weekends with his loved ones. He felt guilty at how tired and distracted and short-tempered he became when he did. He was missing his boys growing up.

And that simply wasn’t good enough.

Brian knew something had to give.

Now, Brian’s no productivity newbie. He’s read Hyatt and Allen and Covey. He’s taken several courses. He’s tried Evernote. He’s implemented GTD.

But for some reason, nothing fully clicked.

Sure, they helped him to crank out more widgets. They helped him build systems and processes. They taught him about weekly reviews.

But they weren’t solving his ultimate problem. They weren’t giving Brian more work/life balance. They weren’t helping him show up more often where it counts.

And I get it.

Because the main problem with most productivity training is that suffers from severe tunnel vision. It’s too focussed on just getting things done. Or it’s hyper-strategic (missions, values, visions) or tactical (systems, processes) but it doesn’t connect up those dots.

Which is exactly why I created TAoL’s TRACKTION Masterclass.

And that’s exactly where Brian’s quest to keep thinking bigger took him next.

When I met Brian, he was struggling to be the husband and father he wanted to be. He was tired of being overwhelmed by action items and stuff. He was sick of having to choose between being good at his work or making more time for everything else.

And the traditional advice on time management wasn’t serving him. It got him to where he was now, but it couldn’t get him to where he was going.

So, here’s what we worked on instead…

We got clear on where Brian’s was spending his energy. We identified then stopped or did less of the outcomes that DIDN’T count. We used the time and headspace that created to get clear on the outcomes that DID. We connected the dots from his big picture to his projects to today’s top priorities, across 8 different areas of life. We rebuilt his systems and processes to be simple and lightweight and focus on more time with his kids. We iterated his game rapidly in our weekly accountability club and group coaching calls.

We totally reoriented his life.

And the result?

I just did a weekly review where I actually touched each part of the system.” Brian recently told me, ”and I was like, oh, this is a really good feeling. I had a super clear mind for the rest of the day, and just got a chance to spend time with my son.

And I was like, THIS is what this is for; THIS is what this whole thing’s about.

And then my wife and I were just chatting and she said, “You know, I notice a difference in the way that you’re organised, you’re preparing for things, you’re thinking about stuff in advance.” She’s like, “Whatever you’re doing, it’s working. Keep doing it.

And to me, that’s like the seal of approval that this process was working. When my wife notices and thinks it’s a good thing, that’s my measurement stick.

Oh, and all this stuff while Brian was performing EVEN BETTER and taking on EVEN MORE responsibility at work.

Pretty cool, huh?

It wasn’t easy, and it took dedication and grit, but by starting with what mattered most, by getting the support that he needed, by finally connecting the dots, Brian went from overwhelmed, anxious and guilty to having more clarity, more balance and more space to be the husband and father he wants to be WITHOUT working harder and WITHOUT compromising on his results or performance at work.
